Dr Lindsy Kass

Dr Lindsy Kass is a Registered Nutritionist (RNutr) and a Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES) accredited Exercise Physiologist. One of Lindsy's established areas of expertise is magnesium and associated micronutrients, with her doctoral thesis having focused on magnesium supplementation and blood pressure.

She has many years of experience at community and elite level health, sport and performance nutrition and physiology and has worked in academia for over 20 years.

She is a Senior Research Fellow in Sport and Exercise Science and Sport Nutrition at the University of Hertfordshire and has led on many major research projects, for both commercial and non-commercial interests and her work has been published in international peer reviewed journals (see further details on the research page).

She has presented at international conferences and has had numerous media interviews as well as regularly being asked for her expert opinion on current nutrition and health articles for national newspapers.

Lindsy also has experience in working with children and public health agencies and has been actively involved with local schools and children's camps, encouraging good health through physical activity and healthy eating. Her consultancy work also includes crisis management and crisis preparedness for sports teams and food companies.

Standing in the Profession

Lindsy's work has been internationally acknowledged through publications and international conferences, with a total of more than 20 publications in peer reviewed journals and over 500 citations. Its wider societal impact has also been significant and has included front page national newspaper coverage, radio interviews (including BBC Radio 4) and podcasts. Her work has been cited on many websites and used by commercial organisations, such as Holland and Barrett. She was also recently invited by the Physiological Society to attend a strategic meeting at the Houses of Parliament on ageing in the workforce.

Research has included the areas of magnesium, micronutrients and muscle repair, carbohydrate sports drinks, blood lactate testing in rowers, diabetes and sleep, and COVID and behaviour change. Two of the projects on which Lindsy was the principal investigator had full NHS ethics.

Her research into Covid and behaviour change was used by the Department of Health and Social Care, Public Health Reform Directorate to help shape its behaviour change strategies and research. It was also presented at Public Health Connect (a forum supported by Hertfordshire's local health authority to promote public health education, training, research and career advice) and presented at 3 international conferences.

Lindsy is a reviewer for a number of journals, a reviewer board member for the International Journal of Environment Research and Public Health (IJEPH) and is currently a Guest Editor for a special edition for the IJEPH, focusing on the long-term health of children through to adulthood.

She is currently on the Special Interest Group of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, which is a national charitable organisation, whose aim is to transform healthcare and level health inequalities through lifestyle medicine. It is a large organisation with ongoing objectives to improve health inequalities and support an improved lifestyle for health for the UK. Her role on this committee is to advise on strategy and interventions.

Lindsy was formerly the Chair of the Equality in Science (EiS) Network, set up under the Athena Swan umbrella, to promote equality in science research. This network is open to all, but is aimed at women in science. Whilst in this role, Lindsy initiated and implemented a new initiative to give staff returning to work after parental leave, a return to work plan that allowed for additional support with research in the first month of returning to work. This initiative was adopted by the whole university as policy and has since been extended to include those returning from long-term sick leave.

Consultancy Work

Lindsy has a variety of experience working independently as a consultant. This has included evaluation, audit and analysis of food provided for the Healthy Activities and Food (HAF) programmes; benchmarking educational programmes; courses for both private and HE establishments; writing white papers and in-depth reports for supplement companies. Her research skills include full statistical analysis and final report writing.
